Lymphedema is a disabling condition of localised accumulation of fluid in a tissue caused by a compromised lymphatic system. It is an incurable disease that affects millions of people worldwide and is most often a consequence of cancer treatment. The main objective of the EU-funded TheraLymph project is to develop treatment to ameliorate this condition using a non-integrative gene therapy approach. The project consortium’s translational research programme brings together scientists and physicians from 5 European countries and will be focused on patients who developed lymphedema after breast cancer. Research will determine risk factors for lymphedema and key molecular players involved in the lymphatic dysfunction. Last update: 11 June Record number:

Last year, year-old Matheus from Brazil developed lymphedema in his left leg after an accident. Matheus described the lymphedema experience perfectly: receiving the diagnosis can create a massive shift in the way you see yourself and how you engage with the world around you, for better or worse. It takes time to adjust. As a sports-mad thirteen year old with dreams of becoming an athlete, Andy was absolutely shattered.

But he pushed through and adapted to his new reality, wearing his compression bandages and coping with the daily stresses of life with lymphedema. This is terrifying not just for me, but for my young family. Still, self-confidence is a struggle for Andy. For all his attitude on the sports field or in a bar, Andy is uncomfortable when it comes to people seeing his legs. I will keep doing what I do and pushing myself to the limit. Andy takes strength from his family and friends, who have been a massive support to him through it all.

Because he has been wearing compression stockings since he was fifteen, Nick is fortunate in that his disorder is less serious than it could have been. However, living with the disorder and wearing compression stockings have taken a toll on his self-esteem and his relationships. Lymphedema

Lymphedema is the buildup of lymph in your body. Lymph is a fluid surrounding tissues. Lymph moves through vessels in the lymph system and into the bloodstream. The lymph system is a major part of the immune system. When lymph builds up, it can cause an arm, leg, or other area of your body to swell and become painful.

To keep everyone safe, our visitor guidelines vary by location. Lymphedema is swelling in your arms or legs. It can happen when your lymph pronounced ‘limf’ nodes — the small, bean-shaped glands that are part of your immune system — are blocked, removed or damaged, allowing excess fluid to collect in your limbs. Your body has hundreds of lymph nodes. These lymph nodes produce a fluid — called lymph or lymphatic fluid — that carries white blood cells throughout your body to fight infection.

Sometimes, the lymph system becomes damaged as a side effect of cancer treatments like radiation therapy or surgery to remove lymph nodes. When these changes prevent lymphatic fluid from flowing the way it usually does, the lymph can pool in the arms or legs and cause lymphedema. Lymphedema therapy is physical therapy that focuses on relieving swelling in the arms and legs by moving lymphatic fluid out of your limbs. Lymphedema therapy can also prevent additional swelling and help keep you comfortable.
